Sleep aids such as Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) have become a popular way in helping people relax and sleep in our ever increasing noisy lives. Brown noise is no exception to this and listening to it is becoming and ever popular way to help block out the humdrum of daily life and help people drift off into their relaxing slumber.

What is Brown Noise?

Brown noise is a frequency of sound that resembles the sound of a busy waterfall or a strong wind rustling the leaves of trees. It is not dissimilar to the white noise of an out of tune FM radio or an old fashion analogue television.

Brown noise has a lower frequency than white or pink noise, giving a strong bass level and treble, meaning it is ideal as a tool to block out the sound of someone snoring or a neighbours loud music.

Common benefits associated with brown noise are relaxation, the ability to focus on the job at had (rather than distracting noises around), and to aid sleep hygiene.

It is particulatly useful for people who find themselves drawn to bass from passing traffic, a noisy party or a noisy partner!

How do I use Brown Noise to sleep?

The first and most important thing to bear in mind when using brown noise is that it shouldn’t be too loud (as this may create an addition irritant to that which is trying to be covered up or cut out).

Wearing a decent pair of earbuds or using a good quality set of speakers will help. Start by setting the volume level of the audio track (see below) so that is just matches the noise which you are trying to block out. This way, the brown noise won’t distract you but will quickly match the ambient sounds around you and begin block them out entirely.
