We left Harwich Ha’penny Pier and it was raining. We were expecting this, so we wrapped up warm with plenty of waterproofs and took a few snacks with us.
I highly recommend you wear good waterproof shoes or boots as well as waterproof clothing you will get wet!
The outward journey to the Seal Colony was a little bit choppy and we did get wet, so if you’re not fond of boats you might want to think about taking the trip during the calmer days of the year. It didn’t bother us too much; WE’RE HARDY!
As you arrive at the nature reserve you’ll see a number of abandoned Thames barges. It’s not actually a graveyard to shipwrecks. In fact, those barges are placed strategically to help prevent erosion. They do look great and add a bit of character to the coastline.
Once we arrived at Hanford Nature Reserve it took a while for us to spot any seals but soon enough one decided to pop up behind the wake of our boat.
Although we didn’t see huge numbers of seals due to the weather conditions it was still a great trip. My brother-in-laws spotted his first avocet.
